About the Liquor Licensing Unit
The unit compromises of three sub directorates which are Administration, Compliance and Secretariat. The Liquor Licensing Unit has the responsibility to receive and process liquor applications and educate the public on the adverse socio- economic effect of alcohol abuse. The unit is also responsible to monitor and enforce compliance to the Gauteng Liquor Act 2003 and protect general public. This is done through carrying out inspections, monitoring compliance to the Act and investigate contraventions and / report recommend punitive measures to the Board where contraventions are established. The unit also liaises with other law enforcement agencies in the eradication of illegal trading of liquor within the province. Section 12(1) of the Gauteng Liquor Act, 2003 made provision for the staffing of the Board. The staff of the secretariat is placed at the disposal of the Board under the provision of the Public Service Act, 1994. The secretariat is responsible to provide secretarial and legal support function to the Board.
